MIRRORS
When I stepped into the courtyard, I felt the sense of being watched. The windows surrounded me. No people, just surfaces, but the feeling stayed. (Panopticon.)
Then, the mirrors. Something about them draws me in. What is up there? At first glance, it was invisible. What is hiding there? And why does it feel like it is watching back?
ENTRANCE/EXIT
You enter the rooftop with a scaffolding- elevator or with a -staircase. These are standards on construction sites. This scaffolding construction is placed on a spot on the left side of the short building( if you stand in the courtyard) this spot is clear from balconies and windows. also cladded with mirrors, reflecting the environment, and so it falls away.
ON THE ROOF
The courtyard continues onto the roof, a private space, unseen, hidden. Fleeing from the uncanny feeling. A space for small events, with a stage and bar facilities.
A pavilion and bar inspired by rooftops, built using materials typically found on them. The design process is reversed—starting with materials and shaping the space around them:
Stepping stones: Usually placed for safety and to protect insulation, now guiding movement.
The arc: A common rooftop element, now forming a skylight.
Polycarbonate panels: Lightweight, functional, and often used for simple rooftop structures.
I-beams: A nod to modernism and the Lijnbaan flats, essential in constructing these buildings.
Solar panels: Typically used to harness energy from the sun—here, powering the bar.
Metal grid: Often used for rooftop walkways.
WALLS
The walls are doubles sided. Built from scaffolding pipes. On the outside the wall is cladded with a one-sided mirror and on the inside the wall is cladded with a normal window. These walls are 3 meters tall and the block wind, sound and they are completely smooth to prevent people from climbing over the wall.
Down below, the dynamic shifts. The uncanny feeling takes over. The people on the roof become the watchers, their gaze falling upon the passersby below.
AIRCONDITIONING UNIT
Using the already existing, still functional airconditioning units as furniture. They vary in sizes and can be used to sit on, stand on or lean against
GRASS
Covering the roof with grass mats to create a even surface which is pleasant to relax on. But also creating a garden effect.
MIRROR WALLS WITH ORANGE LIT PASSAGEWAYS
These walls are there to block the pavilion which is the entrance for residents and the space behind these walls are also part storage. While playing with contrast between reflection and lit up walls
